35. Purpose

My purpose for writing this Commonplace paper is to make teens and young adults aware of body objectification. Just because the model on TV wears a size zero, doesn’t mean you need to be her size to be happy.  Be yourself. Be unique and don’t spend your life trying to be somebody else’s idea of perfection. You do not need to objectify your body in order to feel loved or wanted. Most importantly, love yourself. You should be comfortable in your own skin. I think Marilyn Monroe sums up my point perfectly in her quote, "Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring." We need to stop trying so hard to be like everyone else because everyone is special in his or her own way and they should just own it. The media makes it extremely difficult to do this because they glorify thin gorgeous women. We need to focus on women like Queen Latifah when looking for role models instead of people like Lindsay Lohan and Heidi Montag. Eating disorders and plastic surgery are not the answer to being happy. Queen Latifah, who used to diet for years, has now come to not only accept the way she looks, but love it.  Feeling of self-worth and fear of not being accepted are huge challenges for women today. Women judge themselves harshly based off what the media and men are telling them they should look like. Find self-love first and then others will love and respect you for who you are.

  1. My ARP had to do with body image so I know exactly what you mean. I wish girls all over the worls would accept the way they are and if they do not like the way they are than they can change themselves. But they should only change themselves to benefit them. Another celebrity you may want to consider using as a reference to look up to is American Ferrera (just a suggestion).

  3. Everyone should definitely be comfortable in their own skin.

  4. This is a good paper for girls to relate to. I think making comparisons about Queen Latifa and Lindsay Lohan's lives would be a good addition. Success vs prison. Plus, what guy really wants a stick figure as a girlfriend?

  5. I definitely think this paper topic is a great one. People can relate. Have you seen the video on youtube where they show all the steps into making a billboard model for dove? it shows that the model is altered using photoshop so that the "perfect" woman girls aspire to is fake. Might be of some help to your paper...
here's a link to the video:

  6. I like this topic, it's very dear to my heart. You should look into mentioning the recent wave in body image campaigns in the media that are pushing this issue as well. The masses are voicing this same opinion through outlets such as the Dove ad campaign and the body peace platform of Seventeen magazine.

  7. I agree with this topic. Everyone is not the same and people should be comfortable with who they are.

  9. oh! i forgot to add this sorry. we need to be careful because one little comment from their mom, their teacher or their friends can make them start to think they're not pretty the wat they are.

  10. I agree and once something like that gets in your head it will be hard to convince yourself that it isn't true.

  11. Do you feel that it is the media's fault for creating the image every girl desires? Or the girls' fault for letting that affect them? Every day we hear, see, learn, or experience something that may have an effect on us. Shouldn't it be up to the person to decide what to believe and to decide what is most important to them, rather than letting outside influences get to us so much?

  12. I think that they are both at fault. I definitely agree that women should make the choice to not be affected by images in the media, but that is easier said than done.
